Of freedom, justice, and oppression

Freedom

A major commitment of the forum for moral sciences is to advances the study of freedom and autonomy, which are distinct but closely related values, each foundational to a healthy society and human life. Our research illuminates what it means to be free and autonomous, what it is for some to be freer than others, what conditions are required for a flourishingly autonomous human life, and why these values matter.

Oppression

Oppression is both widespread and multifaceted, impinging in countlessly unjust ways on what we can do, who we can be, and what we can know. The oppression lab studies the nature of oppression under its many facets and the mechanisms by which it operates, from what laws we pass and how we organize ourselves to how we think and talk. By better understanding what oppression is, what it does to people, and how, we aim to improve our tools for resisting it.
